Al Wazifa al- Mashishiyya

From Music of the Soul by Sidi Muhammad al-Jamal:

“The Wazifa al-Mashishiyya is an exercise of deep spiritual importance.  Revealed by the Prophet Muhammad, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, it is the only piece of writing from the hand of Sidi ‘Abd as-Salam Ibn al-Mashish.  The knowledge of the secret of the Prophet, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, is the key to the door or the knowledge of God.”

A Deep Prayer for Opening the Soul

a’udhu bi-llahi mina sh-shaitan ir-rajim:   I seek refuge with Allah from the evil one, the rejected.

bismi’llah ir-rahman ir-rahim:  In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate,

allahumma salli wa-sallam bi-jami’i sh-shu’uni fi th-thuhuri wa-l-butuni:  O Allah, send blessings and peace in all the affairs of the revealed and the hidden,

‘ala man minhu nshaqqati as-‘asraru l-kaminatu fi dhatihi al-‘aliyyati zhuhuran: upon the one from whom the secrets, which were hidden in his lofty essence, were cleft apart.

wa-nfalaqati l-‘anwaru l-muntawiyatu fi sama’i sifatihi s-saniyati buduran: and the lights, which are hidden in the sky of his lofty qualities, dispel the shadows of night as full moons,

wa-fihi rtaqati l-haqa’iqu minhu ‘ilayhi: and in him ascended the truths, from him to Him,

wa-tanazzalat ‘ulumu adama bihi fihi ‘alayhi: and the sciences of Adam descended through him and upon him,

fa ‘a’jaza kullan mina l-khala’iqi fahmu ma ‘udi’a min as-sirri fihi: rendering the entire creation unable to comprehend that which was entrusted to him of the secret,

wa-lahu tada’alati l-fuhumu wa-kullan ‘ajzuhu yakfihi: and before him understanding is diminished; yet each one’s inability to understand suffices him.

fa-dhalika as-sirr al-masunu lam yudrikhu minna sabiqun fi wujudihi: This is the preserved secret that has not been grasped by any one of us in its existence.

wa-la yabluguhu la hiqun ‘ala sawabiqi shuhudihi: And none who comes after him will reach his pre-existent winessing.

fa-‘a’zhima bihi min nabiyin riyadu l-mulki wa-l-malakutu bi-zahri jamalihi az-zahri muniqatun. Magnified is the Prophet whose glowing beauty blossoms the gardens of the dominion and the world of the kingdom.

wa-hiyadu ma’alimi l-jaburuti bi-faydi ‘anwari sirrihi al-bahiri mutadaffiqatun.: And the reservoirs of the world of al-jabarut pour forth in profusion the lights of his dazzling secret.

wa-la shay’a ‘illa wa-huwa bihi manutun: And there is nothing which is not dependent on him,

wa bi-sirrihi as-sariyi mahutun.: and which is not encompassed by his all-pervading secret,

‘ith law la l-wasitatu fi kulli su’udin wa-hubutin: because if he were not the mediator in every ascent and descent,

la-dhahaba kama qila l-mawsutu: then, as it is said, the mediation would disappear.

salatan taliqu bika minka ‘ilayhi: Bless him, a blessing worthy of You, from You to him,

wa-tatawaradu bi-tawarudi al-khalqi al-jadidi wa-l-faydi al-madidi ‘alayhi.: and that is an unceasing and constantly renewed creation pouring out abundantly upon him.

wa-salaman yujari hadhihi s-salata fayduhu wa-fadluhu kama huwa ‘ahluhu,: And grant him peace in accordance with this blessing, as he is worthy of its abundance and favor,

wa-‘ala ‘alihi shumusi sama’i l-‘ula: and on his family, who are the suns of the heavens most high,

wa-‘ashabihi wa-t-tabi ‘ina wa-man tala: and on his companions and followers and those who came after.

‘allahumma ‘innahu sirruka l-jami’u li-kulli l-‘asrari: O Allah! Surely he is Your secret which unites all secrets,

wa-nuruka l-wasi’u li-jami’i l-‘anwari: and Your light encompassing all lights,

wa-daliluka d-dallu bika ‘alayka: and Your guide who leads through You to You,

wa-qa’idu rakbi ‘awalimika ‘ilayka: and the leader who rides Your worlds to You,

wa-hijabuka al-‘a’zhamu al-qa’imu laka bayna yadayka: and Your great veil who stands before You,

fa-la yasilu wasilun ‘illa ‘ila hadratihi l-mani’ati: so that no one reaches except through his noble presence,

wa-la yahtadi ha’irun ‘illa bi-‘anwarihi al-lami’ati: and no straying person can be guided except by his shining lights.

‘allahumma ‘alhiqni bi-nasabihi r-ruhi: O Allah! Join me to his spiritual line,

wa-haqqiqni bi-hasabihi as-subbuhiyi: and make his praised noble descent true through me.

“arrifni ‘iyyahu ma’rifatan ‘ashhadu biha muhayyahu: Let me know him with a knowledge with which I can witness his existence,

wa-‘asiru biha majlahu: and I become his mirror

kama yuhibbuhu wa-yardahu: in the way that he likes and which pleases him,

‘aslamu biha min wurudi mawaridi l-jahli bi-‘awarifihi: through which I am freed from the sources of ignorance, through his deep knowledge,

wa-‘akra’u biha min mawaridi al-fadli bi-ma’arifihi: And I drink directly from the watering places of the bounty, through his knowing.

wa-hmilni ‘ala naja’ibi lutfika: And carry me on the swift noble mounts of Your subtlety,

wa-raka’ibi hananika wa-‘atfika: and on carriers of Your deep love and Your tender mercy,

wa-sir bi fi sabilihi l-qawimi: and lead me on his straight path,

wa-siratihi l-mustaqimi ‘ila hadratihi bi-hadratika  l-qudsiyyati: the straight path to his presence, which is connected to Your holy presence

al-mutaballijati bi-tajalliyati mahasinihi al-‘insiyyati: and which shines with the revelations of his human virtues,

hamlan mahfufan bi-junudi nusratika: a carrying surrounded by the soldiers of Your victory,

mashuban bi-‘awalimi ‘usratika: accompanied by the worlds of Your family.

wa-qdhif bi ‘ala l-batili bi-‘an wa ‘ihi fi jami’i bi-qa’ihi: And use me, to throw me (like a stone) upon falsehood in all its manifestations, in all its places,

fa-‘admaguhu bi-l-haqqi ‘ala l-wajihi l-‘ahaqqi:  so that I refute falsehood with the truth, in the face of the most true.

wa-zujja bi fi bihari al-‘ahadiyyati l-muhitati bi-kulli murakkabatin wa-basitati: And plunge me into the sea of oneness which encompasses the totality of things both complex and simple,

wa-nshulni min ‘awhali t-tawhidi ‘ila fada’i t-tafridi: And pull me out of the morass of metaphorical unity, of words and speech, into the unlimited freedom of uniqueness,

al-munazzahi ‘ani l-‘itlaqi wa-t-taqyidi: which is beyond either releasing or binding (freedom or limitation).

wa-‘aghriqni fi ‘ayni bahri wahdati suhudas: And drown me in the spring of the sea of the unity of witnessing

hatta la ‘ara wa-la ‘asma’a wa-la ‘ajida wa-la ‘uhissa ‘illa biha nuzulan wa-su’udan: until I do not see, and I do not hear, and I do not long for, and I do not sense, and I do not feel, except through it, while descending and while ascending.

ka-ma huwa kathalika lam yazal wujudan: As it is, and like this, it never ceases to exist (as it truly is and continues without ceasing).

wa-j’ali llahumma thalika ladayhi mamduhan wa-‘indaka mahmudan: O Allah! Make my absorption commended by him and praised by You.

wa-j’ali ali llahumma l-hijaba al-‘a’zhama hayata ruhi kashfan wa-‘iyanan: O Allah! Make the Great Veil the life of my spirit by unveiling and eyewitnessing,

‘ithi l-‘amru kadhalika rahmatan minka wa-hananan: since the order is like this – a mercy and a kindness from You.

wa-j’ali llahumma ruhahu sirra haqiqati dhawqan wa-halan: And O Allah! Make his spirit the secret of my reality through tasting and through state.

wa-haqiqatahu jami’a ‘awalimi fi majami’i ma’alimi halan wa-malan: And may his reality unify all my worlds in the places of knowledge, both now and forever.

wa-haqqiqni bi-dhalika ‘ala ma hunalika: And make this true to me, according to what it is with You,

bi-tahqiqi al-haqqi al-‘awwali wa-l-‘akhiri wa-zhahiri wa-l-batini: by the realization of the first truth (primal) and the last truth (ultimate), and the revealed and the hidden.

ya ‘awwalu fa-laysa qablaka shay’un: O First One! Nothing comes before You.

ya ‘akhiru fa-laysa ba’daka shay’un: O Last One ! Nothing comes after You. (Meaning my perishing in You.)

ya zhahiru fa-laysa fawqaka shay’un: O Revealed One! Beyond You there is nothing.

ya batinu fa-laysa dunaka shay’un: O Hidden One! Beneath You there is nothing (nothing excludes You).

‘isma’ nida’i fi baqa’i wa-fana’i bi-ma sami’ta bihi nida’a ‘abdika Zakariyya: Hear my calling in my subsistence and in my annihilation, as You heard the calling of Your slave Zakariyya.

wa-j’alni ‘anka radiyan wa-‘indaka mardiyan: And make me contented with You, and You contented with me.

wa-nsurni bika laka ‘ala ‘awalimi l-jinni wa-l-‘insi wa-l-malaki: And help me, by You and for You, over the worlds of the jinn and humans and angels.

wa-‘ayyidni bika laka bita’yi di man salaka fa-malaka wa-man malaka fa-salaka: And strengthen me, through You and for You, as You strengthen those who travel on the way and who master it, and those who master it and return to travel it (al-baqa’).

wa-jma’ bayni wa-baynaka: And Join me to You.

wa-azil ‘ana l-‘ayni ghaynaka: And remove Your veil of cloud from my eye.

wa-hul bayni wa-bayna ghayrika: And place a barrier between me and everything other-than-You.

wa-la tahul bayni wa-baynaka: And let nothing come between me and You.

wa-j’alni min ‘a ‘immati khayrika wa-mayrika: And make me one of the leaders of Your goodness and caring.

Allaaah!        Allaaah!        Allaah!    (hold each aaa for 12 counts)

Allahu minhu bad’u l-‘amri: Allah! From Him the order begins.

Allahu al-‘amru ‘ilayhi ya’udu: Allah! To Him the order returns.

Allahu wajibu l-wujudi wa-ma siwahu mafqudun: Allah! The essential pre-requisite of existence, and nothing exists that is not He.

‘inna lladhi farada ‘alayka l-qur’an la-radduka ‘ila ma’adin: Surely He who ordained for you the Qur’an will  bring you home again.

fi kulli qtirabin wa-bti’adin wa-intihadin wa-iqti’ adin: In every approaching and every going away, in every standing up and every sitting down, (In every nearness and farness, in my yearning and absence of yearning.)

rabbana ‘atina min ladunka rahmatan wa-hayyi’ lana min ‘amrina rashada:  O Lord! Give us from Your presence, mercy, and provide for us straightforwardness in our conduct.

wa-j’alna mimman ihtada bika: And make us of those who are rightly guided by You,

fa-hada hatta la yaqa’a minna nazharun ‘illa ‘alayka: so guided that no slightest glance falls upon anything that is not You, (by which our sight may not fail)

wa-la yasiru bina watarun ‘illa ‘ilayka: until we have no desire, except for You.

wa-sir bina fi ma’ariji madariji: And guide us in the places of mounting up. (Take us onto the ascending steps.)

‘inna llaha wa-mala’ikatahu yusalluna ‘ala n-nabiyyi: Verily Allah and His angels send prayers upon the Prophet.

ya ‘ayyuha lladhina ‘amanu sallu ‘alayhi wa-sallimu tasliman: O you who believe! Send your prayers upon him, and greet him with the peace of your deep surrender.

allahumma fa-salli wa sallim minna ‘alahi ‘afdala s-salati wa-‘atama at-taslima: O Allah! Send Your prayers upon him from us, the most befitting prayers, and greet him with the most perfect peace.
