A Messenger has come to you

“Indeed, a messenger has come to you from among yourselves, a messenger who is deeply concerned about whatever is distressing you, who yearns for the best for you, and who is kind and unconditionally loving toward the believers” (Qur’an, Surat al-Tawba 9:128) لَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَحِيمٌ la-qad ja’akum rasulun min anfusikum, ‘azizun ‘alayhi ma anittum, harisun ‘alaykum bil-mu’minina ra’ufun rahim.

We have oppressed ourselves

“They [i.e., Adam and Eve] said: We have oppressed our selves [literally: brought darkness upon ourselves]. If You do not forgive us and enable us to receive Your mercy, we will indeed be among the losers.” (Qur’an Surat al-A’raf 7:23)

Remember God, standing, sitting, and lying on your side

“Those who remember God, standing, sitting, lying on their sides and who contemplate the creation of the heavens and the earth, [thinking and saying to themselves], O our Lord-Sustainer, you have not created this in utter falseness! Glory be to You [You are transcendent!], so save us from the suffering of the fire! (Qur’an Surat Al ‘Imran, 3:191)

**Winks of eyes (al-‘uyun): This is an allusion to al-a’yan al-thabita, the “fixed archetypes” of everything in existence (all perceptions, thoughts, and feelings), which are also called the Divine Names and Attributes/Qualities. The are the sources by which Love flows out into manifest reality, creating existence at each moment. To put it another way, the “winks of the eyes” (al-‘uyun) are the means by which God’s theophanies of love flash out from the unseen treasure of God’s Absolute Reality, bring everything into existence at each moment, and plant in each of us the seed of the longing to reunite with and re-embrace our Beloved.

Shah Ni’matullah Vali’s commentary on Fakhr al-Din ‘Iraqi’s *Flashes*

Iraqi: So he [i.e., Muhammad, namely, the Muhammadan Reality or image of God that is at the core of everyone] is the treasury of the treasure of Being, and key to the treasuries of generosity, the Qiblih[i.e., direction of prayer] of (both) the perceiver of existence and the existent.

The manifestation of the Essence and the Attributes of Majesty
Allah (تعالى) by means of his [i.e. the Prophet’s] tongue said, “I was a hidden treasure and I loved that I be known, so I created creation, in order to be known.”

He is the treasure-house of the treasure of
“I was a hidden treasure…”
O friend, seek from him the treasure of the Names.
[Allah], (تعالى) by means of the tongue of His beloved, said concerning him, “If it had not been for you [i.e., O Muhammad], indeed I would not have created the universe.”

Iraqi: [Muhammad is] …the key to the treasuries of generosity, and the Qiblih of (both) the perceiver of existence and existent…

Ni’matullah: And the universal purpose for the creation of the world is his becoming manifest; and the ultimate cause for it is the illumination and the being illumined of the holder of the banner of praise and [of] the possessor of the praised station. The banner of praise is the very essence of praise; and that is the most complete of all praiseworthy qualities. And correct praise is that which is protected form ambiguity. This is the meaning of the very essence of praise, which is expressed as ‘the banner’.

The place of return of all that is praise worthy is Him
The return of all to Him is good.
The station of ‘praised’ is the place of return of all stations, and is the place
of viewing the Names of God which are particular to stations. This station is suitable for a possessor of perfection who is the compendium of the speech [i.e., the Names] of the Omniscient King. As he (ﷺ) said, “I was brought all the speech.”
